"No, I'm not surprised," said Brookwood guard Eric Grube after the Broncos hammered crosstown rival South Gwinnett 45-8 Friday night. "We're capable of doing anything as long as we have our 'A' game." It would be hard to debate what grade the Broncos earned at Brookwood Community Stadium. They scored on six of their first seven possessions and didn't let the Comets into the end zone until the end of the game. In a Region 8-AAAAA contest with Snellville bragging rights on the line, No. 6 Brookwood (5-2, 4-0) scored its fifth consecutive victory. South Gwinnett (1-6, 0-4), meanwhile, lost its fifth consecutive game. The Comets did not disguise the means by which they planned to stay in the game with powerhouse Brookwood —- run the ball plenty and take chances. On their opening drive, they successfully executed a fake punt for a first down and then went for another first down on their next fourth down, which failed. Of their 26 first-half plays, 20 were run calls. Unfortunately for South Gwinnett, those rushes netted only 48 yards and no points. "We've played against three or four wing-T teams this year," Brookwood coach Mark Crews said. "I think the kids are pretty familiar with it." Brookwood running back Demetre Ledlum continued his assault on the opposition, running 11 times for 114 yards and three touchdown. Ledlum broke the game open in the second quarter when he ran untouched through the left side of the line for a 39-yard score and a 21-0 lead. "We've played three or four games in a row where we were expected to win," Crews said. "I think the kids kept their focus and worked hard and kept getting better each week. It's kind of a sign of their maturity." Brookwood linebacker Rennie Curran pointed to the start of the season, when the suspension of several players led to an 0-2 start. "It isn't too hard to not get complacent because of what we went through in the beginning," he said. "Those two losses made us mature for things like that."
